Govt urged to support IT sector to make ‘Silicon Bangladesh’

The experts observed that an emphasis is needed to to be placed for formulation of year-on-year basis plan for the IT sector

Information and communication technology experts yesterday called upon the government and private enterprises to come up with opportunities for young professionals and university graduates so that they could invest their knowledge in the country’s IT sector to transform into “Silicon Bangladesh�?.

They stressed the need for financial assistance for the new IT professionals to implement their innovative ideas to turn the country into an information technology hub in the region.

The experts observed that an emphasis is needed to to be placed for formulation of year-on-year basis plan for the IT sector.

The observation came at a roundtable titled “How can a Silicon Bangladesh be established and can it help develop digital Bangladesh?�?

The Daily Ittefaq, a Bangla daily, hosted the programme at its auditorium.

Dr Cristian Prokopp, principal consultant, Big data Partnership, UK, made a keynote presentation while Tarin Hossain, executive director of the Daily Ittefaq, conducted the roundtable.

According to the keynote speech, Bangladesh has a market of $250 million with abundant skilled workforce.

In his address as the chief guest, State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak said not only the government, private sector has to move forward as mentor to guide the new entrepreneurs.

The government is mulling over establishment of more IT institutes like MIT, said the state minister.

Bickery Russel, head of Agent Development Google, BASIS President Shameem Ahsan, Fayaz Taher, Co-Founder of Startupdhaka.org, BCS President Mahfuzul Arif and Rashidul Islam of Bangladesh Computer Council, among others, took part in the discussion.
